• Open windows and use portable or ceiling fans instead of operating your air conditioner. Even mild air movement of 1 mph can make you feel three or four degrees cooler. Make sure your ceiling fan is turned for summer — you should feel the air blown downward. If you live in a relatively dry climate, a bowl or tray of ice in front of a box fan can cool you as it evaporates.

• Use a fan with your window air conditioner to spread the cool air through your home.

• Without blocking air flow, shade your outside compressor. Change air filters monthly during the summer.

• Use a programmable thermostat with your air conditioner to adjust the setting at night or when no one is home.

• Don’t place lamps or TVs near your air conditioning thermostat. The heat from these appliances will cause the air conditioner to run longer.

• Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Close curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the day.

• Install awnings on south-facing windows. Because of the angle of the sun, trees, a trellis, or a fence will best shade west-facing windows. Apply sun-control or other reflective films on south-facing windows.

• Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units, but not block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses less electricity.

• Grown on trellises, vines such as ivy or grapevines can shade windows or the whole side of a house.

• Avoid landscaping with lots of unshaded rock, cement, or asphalt on the south or west sides. It increases the temperature around the house and radiates heat to the house after the sun has set.

• Deciduous trees planted on the south and west sides will keep your house cool in the summer. Just three trees, properly placed around a house, can save a few hundred dollars in annual cooling and heating costs. In summer, daytime air temperatures can be 3 degrees to 6 degrees cooler in tree-shaded neighborhoods.

• Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents or LED; they produce the same light but use substantially less energy and produce less heat. • Air-dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle as the dry cycle creates heat.

• Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.

• Plug home electronics, such as TVs and VCRs, into power strips, and turn power strips off when equipment is not in use.

• Lower the thermostat on your water heater; 115° is comfortable for most uses.

• Take showers instead of baths to reduce hot water use.

• Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.

• Caulking and weather stripping will keep cool air inside during the summer.

• If you see holes or separated joints in your ducts, hire a professional to repair them.

• Add insulation around air conditioning ducts when they are located in unconditioned spaces such as attics, crawl spaces, and garages; do the same for whole-house fans where they open to the exterior or to the attic.

• Check to see that your fireplace damper is tightly closed.

• You can help get rid of unwanted heat through ventilation if the temperature of the incoming air is 77 F or lower. (This strategy works most effectively at night and on cooler days.) Window fans for ventilation are a good option if used properly. They should be located on the downwind side of the house facing out. A window should be open in each room. Interior doors must remain open to allow air flow.

• Use ceiling fans to increase comfort levels at higher thermostat settings. The standard human comfort range for light clothing in the summer is between 72 F and 78 F. To extend the comfort range to 82 F, you need a breeze of about 2.5 ft/sec or 1.7 mph. A slow-turning ceiling-mounted paddle fan can easily provide this air flow.

• Try not to use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is operating. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load and force the air conditioner to work harder.

• Don’t air-condition unused rooms.

• Clean your A/C’s air filter every month during cooling season. Normal dust build-up can reduce air flow by 1 percent per week.

Tap into Daylighting: Just as it sounds, daylighting means to let in the natural light of the sun during the day, which lowers the need and use for electric lighting. Numerous studies have shown that dayighting not only saves energy, but it’s also healthier because natural light helps kill mold and germs; it exercises eye muscles; and it lowers numerous disease symptoms, especially in the elderly. Business owners will be glad to know that day-lighting has been found to increase worker productivity and increase retail sales up to 15 percent.

Overhangs and Shading: Allowing the sun’s rays to shine directly onto windows and glass doors will add daylighting, but will also add heat into a building. Overhangs, awnings, or trellises will shade your window, and help keep your home cool. Skylights: Skylights are another way to add natural light. Be sure to go with a dual glazed model with glass that’s appropriate for your climate, so you won’t lose too much valuable heat in winter, or overheat in summer. If you go with an operable skylight, you’ll be able to naturally vent warm air in the summer by opening the skylight with cranks or a motor. Many buildings will have a dramatic improvement in comfort and energy use with the addition of just one small operable skylight close to the highest point in the roof.

Solar-tubes: Small round skylights with a metallic flexible tube that funnels natural sunlight to dark spaces inside a building. They’re perfect for closets, baths, and hallways where a skylight would bring in too much light. And they can be snaked around obstacles without requiring extra framing. Some companies offer solar-tubes that include a light fixture, others come with integral vent fans for use in a bathroom. One fixture can offer all-in-one natural day-lighting, an electric light, and vent fan when you need it.

Light Shelves: A light shelf is a way to bounce indirect light deeper into a building. They are typically used in commercial buildings, but homes can take advantage of these as well. They are installed on the inside or outside of glass windows, on the side of the building that faces the equator (South for North America). The shelves can be polished metal or a reflective light color. They shade part of the glass below, which helps in cooling; and they direct light up to the ceiling where it bounces daylight inside the building without any direct glare.

While all of these are cheap, cool ways to light your house this summer – changing your habits doesn’t require any tools, and won’t cost you a penny.

Turn It Off if You Don’t Need It: The simplest and most effective way to save energy is to get in the habit of turning off lights when you leave a room. If you remind yourself of the connection of electricity to power plants and the environmental impacts they have, you’ll always remember.

One of the first places to evaluate is the tire pressure on your vehicle. By ensuring that your tire pressure is properly set, you both extend the life of your tires and can make marginal improvements to the car’s fuel economy. Studies from the American Council on an Energy Efficient Economy demonstrate that for every pound below normal PSI, your car loses 1/3% of fuel efficiency – for underinflated tires, this can add up to substantial losses over time. Always check your tire pressure on a regular basis to ensure proper calibration.

Properly inflated tires reduce the friction from the road, reducing energy loss during the driving process. Upgrading your tires can also save you fuel in certain cases if you have older models.

Easy ways to save electricity.
Turn TV’s, DVD players, games consoles off at the plug when not in use. Some appliances use up to 90% of their power when on standby, so switch them off at the plug to save electricity and money. Line dry clothes to save energy from your tumble drier. Tumble driers are the second biggest energy user in the home after the fridge. If the weather is poor, you can always use a clotheshorse to dry your clothes.
Use energy efficient lighting around the home. Although energy efficient lighting seems expensive at present, energy efficient light bulbs can last up to 10 times longer, and use only 25% of energy used by standard lighting. In the long run, the bulbs will pay for themselves.

Easy ways to save water.
By turning taps off when shaving and when brushing your teeth, you can save at least 6 litres of water per minute. If your taps leak, you could be wasting up to 5,500 litres of water per year, so always replaced your taps faulty washers.
Storing water in the fridge will stop you running the tap for long periods to get cold water.
Switch to watering the garden with a watering can. You can water your plants directly at the base so that the water goes straight to their roots, not on the leaves. Remember to water your plants in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Easy ways to save heat.
Turning your boiler thermostat down by 1 degree, you can save up to 10% on your heating bill each year. With an average heating bill, this could be as much as £90 per year!
Use energy saving window blinds to help trap warm air inside the home in cold weather, and direct sunlight out during hot weather. These types of blinds are around the same price as standard blinds, and can help you save money on your heating bills. Why would anyone want to waste money on blinds that increase your heating bill?
Stop your boiler from overworking by switching radiators off in unused rooms, or rooms that are used less often than others.

1. Install a programmable thermostat: this is going to help you monitor temperatures with ease, and can help you set a range of temperatures for consistent control. Energy companies report that for every degree you lower a thermostat’s set temperature in the winter will save 3% of energy costs over a 24-hour period. That can really add up, especially in long winter seasons.

2. Do purchase energy-efficient appliances. If you’re remodeling that kitchen, consider the latest eco-friendly refrigerators and dishwashers by LG, Maytag, and GE.

3. Buy and install a hot water jacket. These can help cover your water heater and help conserve heat much more efficiently

4. Turn on those ceiling fans. Circulation is key here, and even if it’s warm air coming from the fireplace, you can help heat up a room much faster.

5. Lock those windows tight! When that AC is blasting, be sure that nothing is escaping in different parts of the house. That cool air has a high price to it, so be sure to conserve it just as you would if it was heat.

6. Turn off extra lights. It’s a very simple and easy strategy to make sure you’re in conservation mode as much as possible. Also, keep those lamps and shades sparkly clean to avoid dust buildup and light blockages.

7. Use all electric appliances much less frequently. From the dishwasher to the washing machine, think of more efficient ways to get the job done. Air dry your clothes once in a while, or hand wash and dry those dishes a few times per week. You can also do a pre-rinse of dishes on your own, and run the dishwasher at a lower cycle.

8. Use natural light as much as possible. Open up those shades and let the sun shine in! If you’re in a warmer climate, it can be easier to do this all day long.

9. Keep your refrigerator clean, and not just for sanitary purposes. When you’re cleaning out the refrigerator coils and bulbs on a regular basis, you’re helping it circulate cold air and stay fresh longer.

10. Replace light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps whenever possible. If you need a nice ‘mood’ setting, keep it for the living room or bedroom. All other rooms will benefit with almost 25% less energy, and can last as much as ten times as long.

1. Don’t stop and start your engine, if your going to crank it back within the next minute. Idling your engine for one minute consumes the gas amount equivalent to when you start the engine.
2. Never fill your gas tank past the first click. This results in over-filling, which causes the gas to slosh around and usually out of the spout.
3. OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT! Traveling 65 – 70 mph in a 55 mph zone uses up to 21% more fuel.
4. Drive steadily. Frequent increases or decreases in speed cause, waste fuel.  When approaching hills, accelerate before going up the hill, not while your on it.
   
5. Avoid rough roads, dirt and gravel are very inefficient and could cost you up to 30% of your gas mileage.
   
6. Stoplights are typically times for efficient driving. When traveling from one to the next, use the posted speed limit. This way, you are more likely to reach each light while it is green.
7. Proper maintenance to your vehicle is key. A dirty air filter and low tire pressure can cut your fuel mileage by 5 – 10 mpg.
8. Remove excess weight from trunk or storage area. Toting extra weight up hills and through stoplights cause more strain on your motor.
9. During cold weather watch for icicles frozen to car frame. Unremoved snow/ice cause wind resistance while driving.
   
10. Avoid quick acceleration. Your car consumes more gas acclerating than at any other time. Also, try to maintain a set speed while traveling on the highway.  If traffic is ocassionaly slowing down or stoping at lights, keep enough distince between them, so you don’t have to stop, or slow and accelerate.
    

With these practical steps, anyone can improve fuel mileage.
